Online Money Making Opportunities

Another day, another honking big funding for another online start-up (and yet another broken embargo too!).

It’s like Groundhog Day in Silicon Valley as usual.

Today, Cambridge, Mass.-based HubSpot wins tech’s version of the lottery, grabbing $32 million from Sequoia Capital, Google Ventures and also Salesforce.com.

It is unclear what the valuation for HubSpot is now, although it is likely high given it has raised $65 million now.

HubSpot makes marketing software for businesses, who use it to find prospects and generate leads, along with tools to analyze the process. It claims it has “4,000 customers, over 50 percent market share, five million leads managed, and 70 million page views tracked monthly.”

The Series D financing included HubSpot’s existing venture investors–General Catalyst Partners, Matrix Partners, and Scale Venture Partners–and part of it will be used to cash out existing shareholders. In previous rounds, the start-up has raised $33 million.

Here is the official press release:

Sequoia, Google Ventures, and Salesforce.com Invest $32 Million in HubSpot

Marketing Software Company Attracts New Strategic Investors

CAMBRIDGE, MA–(Marketwire – March 8, 2011)–Today, for the first time ever, Sequoia Capital, Google Ventures and Salesforce.com all invested together in one company, providing HubSpot with a Series D round of financing through a $32 million investment. HubSpot provides all-in-one marketing software used by over 4,000 businesses to get found by more prospects, convert them into leads and sales, and analyze the entire marketing process.

“The fundamental way that people shop, learn, and buy has changed radically in the last few years. HubSpot helps transform the way businesses market from outbound marketing (cold calls, email blasts, and direct mail) to inbound marketing (Google, blogs, social media, mobile, etc.),” said Brian Halligan, co-founder and CEO of HubSpot.

Sequoia Capital has a long history of partnering with founders to help them build long-term, multi-billion dollar companies, including Google, LinkedIn, AdMob, YouTube, Yahoo!, Apple, and Oracle. “We back companies that are transforming their industries,” said Jim Goetz, General Partner at Sequoia Capital. “HubSpot is the emerging category leader in the SaaS marketing sector. Their customer base exceeds that of all the other relevant marketing software companies combined, including Eloqua, Marketo, Genius, and Manticore.”

“Today, every company needs to succeed in search, social, sales, and marketing–I can’t think of a more powerful trifecta than Google, Salesforce.com, and HubSpot. With 4,000 customers, HubSpot is already a clear marketing leader–now, with this new infusion of capital and recognition by Google’s venture arm and Salesforce.com, HubSpot has a great opportunity to separate itself from the pack and become the leading marketing platform in the small and medium business space,” said Brent Leary, co-founder of CRM Essentials.

Google Ventures Partner, Rich Miner (formerly co-founder of Android) said, “We agree with HubSpot’s belief that search engines, social media, and mobile devices have fundamentally changed how businesses should market themselves. We’re thrilled to support their efforts to help thousands of small and medium businesses reach potential customers.”

Dharmesh Shah, co-founder and CTO of HubSpot commented, “We founded the company based on a simple premise: Businesses want an easy-to-use, complete and integrated marketing platform that helps them get more leads and customers. We plan to use this new capital to further invest in this ambitious vision and further our existing lead in the marketing software category.”

With the company’s future already clouded by Steve Jobs’ latest medical leave, the possibility of the iPad’s chief designer, Jonathan Ive, cashing out ups the uncertainty, Dan Lyons writes.

Is Apple losing its design guru?

When Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced in January that he would take a third medical leave, the biggest concern was the cloud of uncertainty that hovered over the company. Now that uncertainty has become an issue again, as rumors have started swirling that Apple might lose its chief designer, Jonathan Ive.

Apple's head designer Jonathan Ive poses for a portrait on January 27, 2010 in Cupertino, California. (Photo by Paul Harris / Newscom)

Reports in Ive’s native England suggest that the man who oversaw the design of the iPhone and iPad wants to spend more time in the U.K., putting him at odds with Apple’s board enough that he would consider leaving the company. Although Ive and Apple won’t comment, the scenario is plausible for two reasons: First, Ive is about to cash in options valued at $30 million that he was granted in 2008; and second, Ive has an especially close relationship with Jobs.

Whether Ive stays or goes, the brouhaha shows the challenges that Apple is increasingly likely to face given the questions about Jobs’ role in the coming months. One scenario being bandied about by Apple-watchers suggests Ive is making a power play to succeed Jobs; it seems just as likely, however, that he simply may not want to work at Apple if Jobs isn’t there.

Still others think the entire notion that Ive might leave is completely unfounded. But either way, the whole incident shows how the Jobs health situation is bringing more drama to a company that, until now, has been a model of tight-lipped discipline.

Apple’s products are famous for their sleek designs, and conventional wisdom holds that losing Ive would be a terrible blow to Apple—“Apple’s worst nightmare,” Britain’s Guardian called it. But the truth is, losing Ive may not be as big a deal as some Apple watchers think.

For one thing, Apple has loads of bench strength in every department, and because of its success it can attract just about anyone it wants.

“How much of this is Steve, how much is Jon, how much someone else? Steve always had an eye for design. The designer is only as good as the client,” says Jean-Louis Gassée.

For another, the real genius behind Apple’s designs might not be Ive—but rather Jobs.

That’s the educated guess of Jean-Louis Gassée, a former top executive at Apple and a longtime close watcher of the company who still has many connections there.

Gassée points out that Ive was already working at Apple when Jobs returned to the company in 1996. Ive joined the company in 1992, when Jobs was gone from the company, having been ousted by the board in 1985.

And before Jobs returned to Apple, Ive wasn’t exactly setting the world on fire. The first products that Ive designed under Jobs were the “Bondi Blue” iMac and the somewhat ugly iBook. Ive’s next products, the "desk lamp" Mac and the early metal laptops, were better looking, Gassée says.

For Apple, the mobile market is a cash cow. The company’s iPhone and iPad are proving to be the top mobile companions for people around the globe. Apple has sold over 100 million iPhones. Its iPad sales have hit 15 million. The company understands the mobile market and it knows how to capitalize on it.

But what about the living room? It has the Apple TV, sure, and the Mac mini is often times connected to an HDTV, but what else has Apple done to push the envelope in the living room? It still hasn’t launched the long-rumored television we keep hearing about, and it seems that offering a game console — a hope for many Apple fans over the past few years — won’t happen.

I fully realize that Apple can’t be everything to every customer. It delivers computers, smartphones, tablets, personal media players, two operating systems, wireless routers, and much more. But I also realize that Apple is an entertainment company. It’s about trying to give people more opportunity to enjoy their lives through technology. And it would only make sense if it doubled down on the living room.

Let’s turn our attention to the Apple TV for a minute.

Prior to its announcement in September, rumors were running rampant over what the former “hobby” would offer. Folks thought it would deliver gaming, interface with DVRs, include Apple’s App Store, and much more. They thought it would be a sizable update over its predecessor.

Instead, Apple offered a stripped-down alternative.

The second-generation Apple TV comes with the ability for users to stream Netflix content. It has Flickr and Internet radio. And it allows users to stream their music over their home network to their televisions. It offers movies and television shows, as well, but most would agree that it’s slim pickings for now.

At that event in September, Steve Jobs said that Apple’s research showed customers didn’t want everything a company could pile into a device. They simply want the ability to consume the content they enjoy without the fuss that might come along with something like Google TV-based devices.

But by delivering the bare minimum, Apple did itself no favors. The company took the easy way out and pretended like it no longer views the living room as a hobby. The only issue is, the Apple TV is still a hobby. It’s a device that lacks all the functionality we’ve come to expect from Apple — a company that typically prides itself on offering the best value for the cash. And at least so far, it leaves me wanting more.

So, what am I looking for? I want to see Apple improve the Apple TV by bringing its App Store to the platform. I’d also like to see some kind of gaming component come to the device, either through the App Store or as part of a more-capable platform.

And perhaps most importantly, I’d like to see Apple think beyond its set-top box and deliver products that try something new. I’m not sold on the possibility of Apple offering a groundbreaking television, but if it can surprise me, I’m all for it.

Simply put, I’m looking for Apple to be Apple. Right now, it’s just like every other company in the living room; it’s content to have a presence but not dominate.

That needs to end.

No single company can stake claim to the living room right now. Steve Jobs just needs to take advantage of that void and do something special.

But first, he needs to take the living room — and its revenue potential — seriously.

Companies Making Money

Majesco Entertainment is announcing today that it is making a bigger investment in Facebook games with the coming launch of its Parking Wars 2. Like many other traditional game companies, publicly traded game publisher Majesco is pivoting into what’s hot.

It will be interesting to see if companies such as Majesco, which have been established in console and handheld video games for a long time, can make the leap into social and mobile games as new, faster-growing players emerge in those markets.

Majesco has a license to make a game based on the popular Parking Wars TV show on A&E. It hired Area/Code to make the game and will formally launch the game by May, said Jesse Sutton, chief executive of Edison, N.J.-based Majesco.

“As Facebook becomes more mature, we are making it part of our strategy,” Sutton said. “Our focus will be on brands, brands, brands” for casual audiences such as boys, girls, families and adult women.

Majesco makes popular games such as the Mama series of games for handhelds and consoles. It published Cooking Mama for Facebook in recent months and the game has spread to more than 1 million monthly active users. Sutton says the company has gotten the quality, retention and monetization figured out on that game and is applying those lessons to the new game.

The new Parking Wars 2 game is being published under unusual circumstances. Majesco commissioned New York-based Area/Code to develop the game. But Zynga agreed to acquire Area/Code in January. Area/Code will finish the game for Majesco, but the game will be published by Majesco, which has a much smaller base of users on Facebook than Zynga, the market leader on Facebook. Sutton said the Area/Code developers were committed to finishing the game and Zynga agreed that they could do so. At some point, Majesco may take over the full maintenance of the ongoing game after the formal launch.

The Area/Code deal highlights a growing problem for smaller publishers like Majesco. There are lots of Flash game developers making games for Facebook, but there aren’t many with a proven track record for making hits. Once a development firm becomes famous for its work, it is often acquired by one of the leaders in the social game or traditional game business. That’s making it tougher for Majesco and other publishers to find the talent to make good games, Sutton said.

“There are very few of these companies now,” Sutton said. “When they show a little success, they are acquired by someone.”

Sutton said his company hopes that brands will play a bigger role on Facebook in the coming years. Spending lots of money marketing original games on Facebook is how Zynga and other big players approach the market. But Majesco doesn’t have that kind of marketing firepower. So it relies on the brand deals. This year, Sutton hopes to establish a trio of titles with strong traffic on Facebook, measured in the millions of monthly active users. Majesco’s first Facebook game was Bananagrams, launched in 2009.

Sutton said Majesco will continue to invest in console and portable game devices such as the Nintendo 3DS, the Nintendo Wii and the Microsoft Xbox 360 with Kinect. One of the company’s big hits is the Zumba game for Kinect. Majesco may also expand into mobile games on the iPhone and Android platform.

Majesco has 85 employees, with internal game producers making games with teams of external developers. In the Parking Wars 2 game, you park your car on a street and feed the meter. Then you try to give your friends tickets. You can buy consumable items such as a brick to throw through the window of your friends’ cars. You can also buy virtual goods to customize your street or car.

In its last fiscal year, Majesco reported revenues of $75.6 million, down 20 percent from a year ago. The loss per share was 3 cents compared to 24 cents a year earlier. Clearly, the company needs to score big with its new initiatives.

How is Elop going to address this by
using Windows OS? He has to do more than just charge more, he has
to produce better product at competitive prices, which keep getting
lower. Elop will have to license the Widows OS, which is an
expense, one that he would bear to nowhere near the same extent if
he used Android. I feel he mistakenly looks at this as Google
commoditizing the Android platform, in lieu of the more reasonable
perspective of Google commoditizing the entire portable computer
space.

Well, the answer has arrived. Microsoft is buying Xx% of Nokia for paying Nokia over $1 billion to product Windows Phone 7 hardware.
Nearly all of this money is undoubtedly going into R&D and
marketing. Nokia and Microsoft (their new defacto owners) invariably see
Google as the pre-eminent trheat and are pulling out all of the stops
to nullify said threat. This also answers the question of how Elop, the
Nokia CEO will be able to deal with the reduced margins of having to
buy OS licenses while competing with vendors who get Android for free –
Microsoft is not only footing the bill, but investing in the business
as well. You see, the drop in Nokia’s share price is highly unwarranted
and their is visible synergy in this deal. Nokia gets to remove the
costs of OS R&D from its line times, sunk costs that have apparently
had negative incremental returns as they have had their asses handed to
them by Apple and most definitely Google – who knocked them off of
their number one market share perch in just over a year.

Microsoft gets the economic benefits of an existing hardware platform
that happens to have the number one marketshare metric in the world,
and gets it for just over a billion dollars. This is a win-win
situation. The question is,  will it win againt Google. Both companies
will still fail if they don’t execute on Google-time, who has compressed
development cycle years into months – literally!

From the Bloomberg article linked above:

Shrinking Margins (yeah, you’ve hear thist from me often enough)

Espoo, Finland-based Nokia needs to cut
costs to keep operating margins from narrowing further, after they
shrank to 4.9 percent last year from 19 percent a decade earlier. For
2011 and 2012, Nokia may cut its budget for research and development in
devices and services by about a third from last year’s spending of about
3 billion euros, said Sami Sarkamies, a Helsinki-based analyst with
Nordea Bank.

Microsoft spokeswoman Melissa Havel
declined to comment on the specifics of the agreement. Laurie Armstrong,
a spokeswoman for Nokia, said the final contract hasn’t been signed and
the company will share further details when they are complete.

Nokia’s royalty payments will help
Redmond, Washington- based Microsoft make a profit on the accord even
after the payments to Nokia, one person said. Some of the payment to
Nokia would be made before the company starts selling the phones,
meaning Microsoft bears some upfront cost in the partnership.

Microsoft shareholders want the company
to salvage its mobile-software business while also reining in costs. The
company doesn’t break out results for its mobile-software unit, and
instead groups them with the profitable Xbox video-game business, making it difficult to evaluate the financial performance of phone software.

Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer
has come under pressure from investors and his own board to improve
sales of mobile software after the company lost market share to Google
and Apple. Microsoft stock has declined 7.8 percent so far this year.

The agreement for the more than
billion-dollar payment was part of a campaign by Microsoft to keep Nokia
from choosing Google’s Android operating system, one of the people
said. Nokia also opted for Microsoft because Windows Phone software,
which is newer than Android and has a smaller number of handsets for
sale, gives Nokia a better chance to stand out, one of the people said.

The agreement also has Microsoft paying Nokia for the right to use its patent portfolio, one of the people said.

As part of the deal, Microsoft will use
Nokia’s Navteq mapping products for functions such as geolocation
services and selling local advertising and coupons tied to a user’s
position. If successful, that also could generate additional revenue for
Nokia, which will share in the sales. The two companies will also
divide revenue from services like search and advertising, Microsoft
President Andy Lees said last month.

I’ve been warning my subscribers about margin compression in this
space, and its about to get much uglier – to the extreme benefit of
consumers of personal and enterprise tech. Previous (and prescient)

Once you're because of the suggestion, make sure that you understand which products will be utilized, how long the task will require and when you will find any additional or concealed expenses that could arise throughout the restore of the roofing. The service provider should be able to answer many of these questions effortlessly as well as forewarn a person of any extra costs that might be incurred if the roof's integrity be broken inside.

Once you have received a few written estimates from roofing companies, assess what each organization or even service provider is willing to offer you for the cost. Do not always low cost the highest bet, simply because occasionally the greatest bet will actually function as the service provider who does the job properly. Additionally, be skeptical of bids that are significantly less than other people. They may be utilizing substandard products or be unethical about the chance of hidden costs. Above all, believe in instincts as well as opt for the contractor who enables you to feel most comfy regarding handing more than your money.

Seven Uyghurs Sentenced to Death

2011-03-23

Critics of the sentences say China has politicized the robberies as acts of terrorism.

A Uyghur man walks past armed Chinese security forces in Urumqi, July 17, 2009.

Chinese authorities in the northwestern region of Xinjiang have ordered the executions of seven ethnic minority Uyghur men convicted of "violent" crimes, official media said on Wednesday.

The death sentences were handed down by the Supreme People's Court in recent days, according to state media in the regional capital, Urumqi.

The men were accused in connection with three separate attacks late last year in the Silk Road city of Kashgar, according to the news website Urumqi Online.

According to another website, the Xinjiang-based Tianshan news site, Aimaiti Tuheti, Yiming Dawuti, and unnamed "others" killed a security guard at a pedestrian mall as part of a failed Aug. 7 robbery attempt.

In a separate incident on Oct. 12, it said, Nuermaimaiti Aobulikasimu and 11 others broke into a house, bound and killed the couple living in it, and took their possessions.

It said the group also broke into the homes of two brothers, robbed them, and killed six people in a Nov. 11 attack in Kashgar.

The report gave no information about the victims or the schedule for the executions.

Three of the men were sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, a sentence that is normally commuted to life imprisonment in China's judicial system.

They were convicted of deliberate homicide and armed robbery by the Kashgar Intermediate People's Court in the first instance.

'Strike hard' campaign

A Han Chinese resident of Urumqi surnamed Yang said a reference to "terrorism" in official news reports on the case showed that it was being politicized by the authorities, who have launched a series of "strike hard" campaigns in Xinjiang following deadly ethnic violence in July 2009.

"There is an implied political meaning; that they were somehow engaged in separatist activities or ethnic divisions," said Yang.

Exile Uyghur groups said the trials had been conducted behind closed doors, with scant opportunity for public scrutiny.

"The entire process against these men, from the trial through to the judgment, was opaque," said Dilxat Raxit, spokesman for the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress.

"There was also very little reasonable evidence to convict them on a legal basis, because all the evidence came from one side of the case," he said.

"We strongly condemn the Chinese government for continuing to pursue their policies of ethnic division," said Raxit.

"We are also strongly opposed to the death penalty in this case."

Earlier cases

Last month, the Supreme Court sentenced four Uyghurs to death for alleged involvement in an Aug. 19 bomb attack in Xinjiang’s western Aksu city.

The World Uyghur Congress pointed to concerns over lack of transparency in those cases too.

The Aksu blast left eight people dead, including two of the bombers, and 15 wounded after a man riding a three-wheeled vehicle threw explosives at a group of uniformed patrolmen. Four Uyghurs were arrested shortly after the attack.

State media characterized the cases as acts of terrorism and unrelated to longstanding ethnic tensions between Uyghurs and Han Chinese in the region.

Exiled Uyghur dissident Rebiya Kadeer has warned that attacks like those in Aksu will continue to occur until Beijing addresses the underlying source of tension in the region.

Millions of Uyghurs—a distinct, Turkic minority who are predominantly Muslim—populate Central Asia and Xinjiang.

Uyghurs say they have long suffered ethnic discrimination, oppressive religious controls, and continued poverty and joblessness despite China's ambitious plans to develop its vast northwestern frontier.

Those frustrations erupted in July 2009 in deadly riots that left nearly 200 people dead, by the Chinese government's tally.

At least 26 people, mostly Uyghurs, were sentenced to death in the aftermath of the riots, many of whom have been executed, according to state media.

China is believed to execute more people each year than the rest of the world’s countries combined, although the government does not publish official figures.

Rights groups say Beijing may execute as many as several thousand prisoners annually.

Chinese authorities blame Uyghur separatists for a series of deadly attacks in recent years and accuse one group in particular of maintaining ties to the al-Qaeda terrorist network.

New training scheme

China on Wednesday also announced a training scheme which places ethnic minority graduates from Xinjiang in work elsewhere in China.

Governments of the destination cities will spend 450 million yuan (U.S.$ 69 million) for the program, while Xinjiang will spend 400 million yuan (U.S.$ 61 million), the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The program targets some 60,000 jobless college graduates in Xinjiang, around 80 percent of whom are from ethnic minorities, and 60 percent of whom are women.

However, some commentators see the move as an attempt to assimilate non-Han Chinese into mainstream Chinese culture.

"From the point of view of ethnic minorities, the graduate work scheme is really taking the cream of youth from the minorities and using them to 'further cultural development,'" wrote one ethnic minority user on a popular microblogging service.

"In fact, the culture that is being advanced is Han culture, and this group of young people will have been totally brainwashed," the microblog update said.

An Urumqi resident surnamed Li agreed.

"They have run senior high school schemes like this before during the past few years," he said.

"Whether it's high-schoolers or graduate training programs, these are measures that are aimed at thought control and brainwashing, and the 'Partification' of their education," he said.

Whether it had been actually uncertain, info acquired by the whistleblower web site, Wikileaks, has confirmed Chinese language federal government fears more than its continued charge of the location it calls Xinjiang, which is also known as Eastern Turkestan. The leaked wires through Ough.S. diplomats demonstrate the actual degree to which Chinese government bodies make an effort to convince governments globally to consider its stance on problems impacting Uyghurs. The actual cables additionally show the actual United States' issues as well as sights concerning the ongoing repressive steps in the area.

The majority of lighting associated with Chinese language federal government stress are the cables directed to Chinese frustration, or the specter associated with Chinese language ire, over the discharge of Uyghur detainees within Guantánamo to 3rd countries. A December 29, 2008 cable applies exactly how Chinese language Assistant Foreign Reverend Liu Jieyi fulfilled with the Ough.Utes. Ambassador in order to China in order to voice Beijing's strong competitors associated with launch in order to any kind of nation other than China, which when the U.S. did certainly accede for this ask for it would "avoid harm to bilateral relations and also to co-operation ‘in important areas'". In addition, a Feb 2009 cable television explains the way the Chinese language Ambassador in order to Kyrgyzstan, Zhang Yannian, regarded the actual possible release of Uyghur Guantánamo detainees as "an unfriendly behave towards us" along with a "slap within the face". The Ough.Utes. federal government stood company in not really releasing the actual detainees in order to The far east illustrates the actual extent from the politicized nature from the Chinese language judicial program. Genuine concerns over terrorism are easy to understand, but in the actual U.Utes. government's observe the detainees would most likely encounter torture and execution if they came back in order to China

Chinese government pressure regarding the actual Uyghur Guantánamo detainees was not only applied to the Ough.Utes. government, but additionally in order to Brand new Zealand and a handful of European government authorities which were thinking about resettlement. Albania, Germany and Finland, as well as Eu fellow member says all appear to have borne the brunt associated with Chinese federal government unhappiness. Regarding Indonesia, that was initially prepared to consider 2 Uyghurs on solely humanitarian reasons, Uyghur Guantánamo cases had been much less preferable to additional detainees because of the negative effects accepting Uyghurs would have on relationships along with China. A Might Eight, '09 cable relates exactly how "German Ambassador Michael Schaefer reported which Germany experienced informed China of the Ough.S. request to simply accept a few Uighur detainees kept from Guantánamo and had been subsequently cautioned through China associated with ‘a large burden upon bilateral relations' if Germany were to accept any detainees".

The actual diplomatic cables additionally talk about the actual unrest within Urumchi, the local capital, in July 2009. A This summer Thirteen, '09 cable talking about bulk incidents within China states:

"Ethnic riots such as those in Xinjiang This summer 5-7 and in Tibet within 03 of 2008 differ markedly within source as well as nature from mass occurrences, XXXXXXXXXXXX emphasized in order to PolOff [Political Officer] on XXXXXXXXXXXX. Both existing severe trouble for the Party, XXXXXXXXXXXX said, but the Party leadership would not wait to open fireplace upon Uighurs or even Tibetans when they considered it essential to recover order. Bulk incidents pose another type of risk, he said, as the leadership is ‘afraid' to fire on Han rioters with regard to anxiety about causing massive open public outrage that would turn against the Party."

This is a relaxing viewpoint, especially when one views the evidence offered in two reviews launched this season by the Uyghur Human Privileges Task (UHRP) as well as Amnesty International that fine detail eyewitness accounts of the use of lethal live fire against Uyghur protestors in This summer '09. Additionally, the declaration that fire would not be deployed against Han Chinese language protestors has resonances for the different approach taken by Chinese language protection causes in Urumchi in order to Han Chinese language direct orders in Sept 2009. Throughout those direct orders, then Party Secretary, Wang Lequan, addressed protesters, that experienced demanded that he inform them about federal government responses in order to protection issues. An identical ask for to satisfy using the Party Assistant through Uyghur demonstrators within This summer wasn't fulfilled.

The actual wider consequences from the unrest additionally saw a short discussion on the effect it would possess on Iran-China relations, as well as on relationships with Australia after World Uyghur Congress President, Ms. Rebiya Kadeer, talked at the National Press Membership in Canberra in July '09. In the second option situation, china federal government "privately warn[ed] a major Australian bank which sponsors the nation's Press Membership to use it's influence to block the Kadeer speech there".

The actual United States' issues concerning the situation in the Uyghur region also come through within the wires. In a dialogue upon plan direction within Tibet, U.S. officials clarify that it'll end up being impossible with regard to Chinese leaders to adopt a much softer collection "if they look like doing this below international pressure". The cable out dated 04 Sixteen, 08, 30 days after the episode associated with unrest in Tibetan regions, additionally relayed the actual observation "that household stability continues to be leadership's main concern above all else, meaning there will ‘almost surely' be absolutely no rest of the present hard collection upon Tibet or perhaps in locations like Xinjiang." The info included in the cable television also storage sheds gentle about the severe level of sensitivity that the Chinese federal government views territorial integrity, and the possible drip more than of unrest through Tibet.

The chance of solutions to tensions within Tibet and Xinjiang arising from civil culture tend to be debated in a February Twenty-four, 08 cable. Whilst suggesting that China's financial success will increase it's potential to deal with democratic reform, the cable also discusses exactly how Chinese leaders see the effectiveness associated with "a restricted growth of municipal society, such as improvements in the rule associated with regulation along with a more powerful role with regard to authorized beliefs, NGOs, charities along with other stars within places that contribute to social stability and do not challenge Communist Party rule." This can be a notable change in thinking, which has seen Ough.Utes. authorities market the notion that Chinese economic improvement, and economic relations with The far east will bring about a progressively democratic culture; nevertheless, more belief appears to be placed in a grassroots motion compared to one that starts in the top quantity of a Chinese government. Nonetheless, the actual cable television concludes which "[i]n places for example Tibet as well as Xinjiang, driving a car of separatism leads to tight limitations about the development of municipal culture." This approach is viewed as counter-productive through the recognized, who suggests that the actual U.S. federal government "should still express...serious issues more than Beijing's human privileges report as well as appeal to China's developing awareness which higher regard for human rights, religious freedom and also the rule of regulation will serve to advertise the very development and social stability which The far east looks for as well as to enhance China's international image." This type of technique might take considerable diplomatic skills thinking about "China's weird concern that the United States secretly encourages routine alter as well as ‘separatists' in Taiwan, Tibet as well as Xinjiang".

The cables offer understanding of the actual every day company of diplomacy that's rarely owned by the general public, and it is interesting to note the amount of work done behind closed doors upon Uyghur problems. The importance of the actual role of the us as a keep track of of Uyghur individual rights problems within personal conversations is created obvious, as well as contrasts with its sensible public stance. The staff from the Uyghur Individual Rights Project is actually well aware of pressure the Chinese federal government exerts upon Uyghur activists; still, the details associated with Chinese language government stress upon its counterparts is actually illustrative from the degree which Chinese authorities make an effort to control contrary narratives. With increased revelations in the future from Wikileaks, issues more than Uyghurs might not grab the actual head lines, however the wires have shed new light on the paperwork associated with human privileges conditions within the Uyghur area.

Under the influence of the religions which they taken, Uyghur People taken successively, and sometimes in a competing way, a great number of written forms (turco-runic, brahmi, tokharien, soghdien) before developing their own graphic system.

The entrance of Islam was a great change simply because it was followed by the assimilation of the Uyghur areas in the enormous Turco-Mongolian and Muslim Empire. Thus, the descendants of Genghis Khan slowly replaced their writing by a Arabo-Persan alphabet, still used today.

If their own writing, their language and their religion mark a real difference with the culture of Chinese Han, the Uyghurs also differ from their aspect, so characteristic of Central Asia's people. A matt skin, eyes representing a whole pallet of colors, from black to deep blue, features pointing out to the Mongolian, Turkish or Uzbek roots of these men and these women.

For a few years, China has included the proper identity of these remote people, though they represent only 8 million population - a trifle for this huge land. Thus, the Uyghurs are now part of the 56 ethnic minority groups having been well known in an official way by China.

This particular law will allow these people a few privileges in a land exactly where their difference is very often repressed. Thus, Uyghur families escape the "single child policy" and their language is accepted as the second official language in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

The integration of the Uyghurs and their culture in the People's Republic of China, however, appears very illusory. The presence of all-natural resources in Xinjiang, and its closeness with nations well-known as very sensitive, highly urged the government to speed up the sinicization of this area. Million of Han thus came to settle in this new Chinese eldorado, monopolizing the larger responsibility jobs.

In response to this true will to assimilate the Uyghur people into the Chinese culture, an independent party like East Turkistan Islamic Movement(ETIM) was born in the early 1990.

Saying more flexibility, but specially the recognition of their true identity, this movement was seriously repressed by the power authorities in location Xinjiang.

The events of September 11, 2001, were the perfect occasion for the Chinese government to justify true reprisals: they declared the "Uyghur freedom fighters" as dangerous terrorists linked to Al Quaida because of their Muslim origins and their proximity with Pakistan and Afghanistan... However, the terrible repression which followed did not calm down the anger. The Uyghur peoples population continues today to proudly continue to keep their identification and their civilization , although they become a minority on their own territory.

Making Money From the Internet

In his New York Times column complaining about Huffington Post and the new economics of content competition, I think David Carr makes two understandable but fundamentally fallacious assumptions about news and media: that the value in journalism is in content and that making content must be work. Because that's the way it used to be.

In their op-ed the next day in the New York Times complaining about copyright losing its hardness, Scott Turow, Paul Aiken, and James Shapiro extend the error to entertainment, assuming that content is entertainment and content is what content makers make.

Not necessarily.

Pull back to view the true value of these things: information, knowledge, enlightenment, amusement, experience, engagement. Content can be and has been a vessel to deliver their worth. But it is not the only one. That is the lesson of the internet -- indeed, of Huffington Post itself. I have argued that the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, the BBC, and other media should have but never would have started the Huffington Post because they, like the gentlemen above, still see content as value in itself and further believe that content is their own franchise (granted by their control of the means of production and distribution). So the benefits of content cannot come from others -- bloggers, commenters, citizens, amateurs -- as new wine in new casks. They instead want to put their old wine in the new skins (witness The Daily).

That is why old media people are missing new opportunities. It's not about the content (stupid). It's about the value.

We can be informed now by many means: by our neighbors telling us what they know, enabled to do so by the net, at a marginal cost of zero, doing so not because it is work (and work must be paid) but because this is what neighbors do for each other. We can be entertained by many means: by clever people making songs and shows and telling stories because they love doing so and because they are compensated in attention rather than royalties (and that attention may well lead to money when they can finally detour around the gauntlet of old media's closed ways to find audiences on their own).

Why do people write on Huffington Post? Because they can. Because they give a shit. Because they like the attention and conversation. Because they couldn't before. Why do they sing their songs on YouTube? Same reasons.

Is there still a role for the journalist, the professional, the artist in this? Perhaps. I think so. That's why I am teaching journalism school. But I'm not necessarily teaching them to make content. That is now only one of many, many ways to meet the goals of adding value to information, time, and society. Some of my entrepreneurial journalism students are, for example, creating businesses that will use data to impart information; they will add value by gathering and analyzing it and making it possible for you to find the intersecting points that matter to you. Other of my students are creating platforms for you to get more value out of your own data. Others are creating platforms for people to connect around interests and make and find their own value. Others are finding new ways to sustain reporting and the making of content. They are all valid if they bring value.

If you concentrate on the value, not the form -- content -- then the possibilities explode.

Turow et al shut down the idea that opening up information can yield greater value that protecting it. Sharers are...

... abetted by a handful of law professors and other experts who have made careers of fashioning counterintuitive arguments holding that copyright impedes creativity and progress. Their theory is that if we severely weaken copyright protections, innovation will truly flourish. It's a seductive thought, but it ignores centuries of scientific and technological progress based on the principle that a creative person should have some assurance of being rewarded for his innovative work.

No, I'd say rather that there are more ways to open up value. If Wikipedia were copyrighted by a publisher, it never would have become Wikipedia because it would be owned, not shared. We now have a new means to collect value rather than merely to own content.

I remember at the DLD conference a few years ago when Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales defended himself from a ninja-knife-wielding Jason Calacanis over paying people to contribute to online resources. Calacanis, like Carr, called it work. Wales instead likened it to a pickup game of basketball. Viewed from a distance, basketball certainly looks like work; they sweat enough. So why don't we demand that they be paid? Why aren't we lamenting the loss of a marketplace for their value? Because that's not where the value is. It's in the fun.

Granted, what's done with that fun -- how it is exploited -- is relevant. If I start charging admission to watch you play basketball -- it is great content, after all -- or if I put sponsors' banners on the court -- you did draw an audience -- you might want a cut. If you can get it -- if you can show that there aren't a million competitors for court time in an open marketplace -- great! But what if the gate or the ads merely support my ability to provide free court time to you or free uniforms to your town-team kids? The economics are not necessarily sweat = work = product = pay. Neither is it any longer true that owning the expensive means of production and distribution assures a return on that investment. There are other expressions of value.

The truth is that Huffington Post recognizes the value of professionalism. I've lately recalled Arianna Huffington talking with Guardian editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger in London a few years ago when he -- with native irony, in front of his reporters -- asked why the hell she was hiring reporters, who are a pain in the ass to manage and expensive to boot. Because their stories get more traffic, she said. They add value. That's why she has editors and curators. They add value. That's why she has technologists who make the Huffington Post such a social experience. They enable value.

That's what I'm teaching my entrepreneurial students: add value. And be efficient: take advantage of the free exchange that is already happening -- the free and open platforms and the information that now easily passes on them. Then put your precious resources where you most add value. Do that before you even think of extracting value. There are the new economics of what we used to think of as content.

I recently read about Matt Slauson, an NFL player, who has been pretty successful over the last few years but is now worried about his financial future. He's concerned about the NFL lock-out and what it might do to his income. Even though a player can have a decent contract, some of the money is usually an up-front bonus and the rest is performance-based.

Matt Slauson isn’t destitute by any means, but he decided to move his wife and baby into his parents’ house to lower expenses and boost savings. This seems like a drastic act in light of the fact that he was making hundreds of thousands of dollars per year, but money can get used up quickly if you expect it will never end or if you’re not paying attention. Matt is going with a prudent solution to a situation that hopefully will only be temporary.

When you live at home with your parents what are the real savings? Normally your housing costs take up approximately one third of your monthly basic budget. If you move in with your parents, they should be willing to continue to pay for those costs that aren’t affected by you being there, like the mortgage, home insurance, and taxes, or if they’re renting, then the monthly rent.

Checking the website Rentals.com I looked at the average prices for a two bedroom rental in Syracuse, NY, Long Branch, NJ and Orlando, FL and they all were about the same: $1000 per month. So right off the bat you can save a nice chunk of change by moving in with your parents, ($12,000 per year). This assumes that you aren’t sharing the apartment with someone else who is splitting the rent but even in that case you would be saving $500 per month or $6,000 per year.
