foreclosure homes

In a major ruling Friday, a coalition of nonprofit defense lawyers and consumer protection advocates in Maryland successfully got over 10,000 foreclosure cases managed by GMAC Mortgage tossed out, because affidavits in the cases were signed by Jeffrey Stephan, the infamous GMAC “robo-signer” who attested to the authenticity of foreclosure documents without any knowledge about them, as well as signing other false statements.

The University of Maryland Consumer Protection Clinic and Civil Justice, Inc., a nonprofit, filed the class action lawsuit, arguing that any case using Jeffrey Stephan as a signer was illegitimate and must be dismissed. In court Friday, GMAC agreed to dismiss every case in Maryland relying on a Stephan affidavit. They can refile foreclosure actions on the close to 10,000 homes, but only at their own expense, and subject to new Maryland regulations which require mandatory mediation between borrower and lender before moving to foreclosure. Civil Justice and the Consumer Protection Clinic also want any cases with affidavits from Xee Moua of Wells Fargo, who has also admitted to robo-signing, thrown out, but that case has not yet been settled.

This was not the plan of GMAC and other banks caught using robo-signers last year. They hoped to undergo a pause in proceedings, run a quick “double-check” and then issue substitute documents in the same cases. That would have been a much more rapid solution for the banks and would have resulted in many more foreclosures. Now GMAC has to go back and basically file the entire case all over again, meaning they have to give notice of foreclosure to the borrower, engage the borrower in modification options, and basically run through the whole process from the beginning. They cannot use the shortcut solution, thanks to the class action suit filed. GMAC’s dismissal of every foreclosure in Maryland shows their doubts they would have won the class action.

The Consumer Protection Clinic at the U. of Maryland is a class taught by Peter Holland. Rather than just read and lecture about foreclosure fraud and consumer protection law, Holland has the class join motions, prepare cross-examinations and legitimately get involved in the cases. It reminds me of the class of Alan Dershowitz depicted in the film Reversal of Fortune, or the Medill Innocence Project investigating wrongful convictions at Northwestern. Given the national scope of foreclosure fraud, you can imagine classes like this springing up all over the country.

As I said, this doesn’t mean that GMAC cannot refile foreclosures in these cases. But they have to spend a lot of time and money to go back to the beginning and redo every case, and must adhere to Maryland law of allowing mediation. Maryland is a judicial foreclosure state which has produced some of the better rulings during this crisis. But we’re starting to see challenges even in non-judicial foreclosure states, like Massachusetts, where the Ibanez case has thrown every foreclosure in the state into turmoil. The rates of moving properties through foreclosure have dropped dramatically, in all 50 states, by an average of 50%. It just seems inevitable that lawyers in other states will follow the Maryland action and attempt to get everything which used a robo-signer thrown out.

And if the Ibanez case, which questions the right for banks to foreclose at all, can be broadly applied, those rates will drop even further. And Georgetown Law Professor Adam Levitin thinks may be the case.

LPS Applied Analytics released their November Mortgage Performance data. According to LPS:

• The average number of days delinquent for loans in foreclosure is a record 499 days

• Over 4.3 million loans are 90 days or more delinquent or in foreclosure

• Delinquency rates are down across all products as more loans entered foreclosure and new delinquencies declined.

• Foreclosure inventory increases are being driven both by elevated levels of foreclosure starts as well as a very limited amount of foreclosure sale activity.

Click on graph for larger image in new window.

This graph provided by LPS Applied Analytics shows the percent delinquent, percent in foreclosure, and total non-current mortgages.

The percent in the foreclosure process is trending up because of the foreclosure moratoriums.

According to LPS, 9.02% of mortgages are delinquent (down from 9.29% in October), and another 4.08% are in the foreclosure process (up from 3.92% in October) for a total of 13.10%. It breaks down as:

• 2.61 million loans less than 90 days delinquent.

• 2.16 million loans 90+ days delinquent.

• 2.16 million loans in foreclosure process.

For a total of 6.92 million loans delinquent or in foreclosure.

Note: I've seen some people include these 7 million delinquent loans as "shadow inventory". This is not correct because 1) some of these loans will cure, and 2) some of these homes are already listed for sale (so they are included in the visible inventory).

Two key numbers to watch in 2011 are:

• New delinquencies. With falling house prices, delinquencies could start to increase again.

• Foreclosures. With the end of the foreclosure moratoriums, foreclosure sales should increase - and the number of homes in the foreclosure process should decline.  However REOs (Real Estate Owned) will increase unless the homes are sold.

Making Money Secrets

It’s not all roses for the PS3 following further developments on the thriving PS3 hacking front today, as the group responsible for the Wii’s Homebrew Channel, going by the slightly counter-intuitive moniker of fail0verflow have turned their attention to Sony’s pride and joy and have summarily proceeded to strip it of its secrets. If you go by their word, at least.

style="text-align: center;">

id="more-50465">The hack apparently enables them to gain “full control of the PS3 system,” not as a means to illegally reduced video game expenditures you see, but solely in the interests of enabling every PS3 firmware and variant to run Linux. And here we were asking ourselves why it took four years for people to hack this thing. There’s probably a lesson here, somewhere, Sony. Something about giving people what they want or the ones who can will just take it. And never ever give them what they want, then take it away again, unless you want your “Private keys” in the press. Something along those lines.

Ho! Ho! Ho! And a Merry Christmas to you all!

It's that time of year again and I've been so busy making Xboxes and E-readers and blankets with arms in them that I sometimes forget there are others like me doing good works but who are in need of some help.

These other "Santas" operate on a shoestring and need money to do their kind deeds. Unfortunately they can't do what I do to cover the cost of my operations. (I rent out my North Pole facilities to Superman eleven months of the year for him to use as his Fortress of Solitude.)

So Mrs. Claus, the elves, the reindeer and I are asking if you could make a last minute donation to one of the six worthy organizations I've listed below. Or do it as a gift in someone else's name and make that their Christmas present (thus fewer chimneys for me to go down. I know, I know, stop with the burgers in a donut bun.) These Santas will then turn around and use your money to create gifts greater than anything I could ever make in my workshop.

Here they are:

** The Innocence Project. Hundreds, if not thousands, of Americans sit in prison tonight having been wrongly convicted of a crime. They are 100 percent innocent and the system has the DNA samples to prove it. The Innocence Project is an amazing group that provides free attorneys and researchers who devote their time to freeing these innocent men and women. It's no mistake that human rights groups place the United States on their list of countries who throw the innocent behind bars. No country on earth (including China, with four times the population of the United States) has more people in prison than America. Please give to the Innocence Project so that those who've committed no crime do not spend another night in jail -- and so I don't have to spend so much time on Christmas Eve going through security when I make deliveries to them.

** The Bradley Manning Defense Fund. If I witness a crime while making my rounds on Christmas Eve, and I report it, I'm considered a hero. (Sometimes there's reward money!) Private Bradley Manning of the United States Army allegedly came across video of his fellow soldiers gunning down and killing in cold blood two reporters from Reuters and a group of Iraqis who were civilians. He apparently decided to report this crime to the American people. For this, he has been arrested and thrown into the brig -- where he has sat in tortuous solitary confinement for seven months. He is also believed to be the source of thousands of documents obtained by WikiLeaks which show the disgusting and immoral behavior of your government and Pentagon as they've prosecuted two illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is a true travesty taking place and it's being done in your name. Please contribute to his legal defense fund and please send him a holiday card at:

Bradley Manning

c/o Courage to Resist

484 Lake Park Ave #41

Oakland CA 94610

USA

(See BradleyManning.org for how to mail things to him directly.)

** WikiLeaks. What more needs to be said? Frankly, in retrospect I'm GLAD they leaked my 2009 Naughty & Nice list -- especially the parts about the U.S. government. I know that may hurt a bit for those of you who are Americans, but trust me, it's good for you in the long run. What I do foresee in the coming year, though, is a battle for who controls the internet -- and those in power are going to find ways to clamp down and not make it so easy for all of us to share with each other so freely. (Another good group to give to that is helping to keep the internet free is Save the Internet.) From the Iraq War video to the proof that you're backing a corrupt government in Afghanistan to the fabricated cables sent to the Bush State Department from Havana about Mike's movie, WikiLeaks has performed an invaluable service. As long as they don't dig into what my elves do in the 11 months they're on vacation, I'm solidly behind WikiLeaks.

** The Water Project. Over a billion people on this planet have no access to clean drinking water. Approximately 2 million children under age 5 are killed each year worldwide by a water-related disease. This is insane considering we have the technology and the people power to fix this in a very short time period -- if we wanted. The money from just one year of the Iraq War would pretty much take care of it. Sad, isn't it, how we're capable of so much more, of being so much better. The Water Project is a hands-on, boots on the ground organization that's digging wells and getting clean drinking water to the Third World. This is one delivery -- water for a billion people -- that just doesn't fit in my sleigh.

** Park 51 Islamic Community Center ("The Ground Zero Mosque"). Here's a tip: if there's anything that will get you a lump of coal in your stocking, it's hating people based on their race or religion. And I'm sorry to say, folks like that were out in full force this year. They even won themselves an election. Soon they will hold congressional hearings to out America's Kenyan-born Muslim president. (My team's already getting extra coal ready for Christmas 2011.)

Meanwhile in lower Manhattan, a group of people who happen to be Muslim want to build a community center. They asked the Jewish Community Center in Manhattan for help. They helped them. It was so nice it made me think I should branch out into Hanukkah and Ramadan. Then the haters showed up. But I believe Park 51 will win this fight. Please help them.

** Democracy Now. This great daily show presents the news we never get to hear on mainstream radio or TV -- especially at the North Pole, where for some reason the cable system only runs the Hallmark channel and Spike. Amy Goodman and Co. do an incredible job bringing the truth to the American public every morning. I listen to them and I support them. (And I support all efforts for non-profit, community-based radio stations. You can learn more about that movement at Radio for All.)

So give if you can. I know these are tight times for most people and you've got yourselves and your families to take care of. I hope this time of the year is going well for you and if not, then please know that there are many -- including me -- who care about you and yours. Working together, it will get better for everyone.

Finally... those of you who don't have chimneys, could you possibly leave the door open this year? I don't like it any more than you do when I have to break in through your bathroom window.

Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night,

Santa (c/o Michael Moore)

Making Money Scam

Phil explains how the oil markets are a colossal scam, once again enriching the big bankers and energy sellers at the expense of everyone else.  And of course, our propaganda machine mainstream media is making matters worse rather than engaging in objective reporting. - Ilene

Fake-Out Thursday – Oil Scam Continues Unabated

By Phil of Phil's Stock World

What a joke the oil market is!

First of all, the NYMEX contracts for January delivery close on Tuesday and there are still 132,168 open contracts or 1,000 barrels each (132M) scheduled for delivery to Cushing, OK, a facility that can handle at most, 45Mb of crude and is, at the moment, full.  The price of those barrels surged from $86.82 all the way back to our shorting target of $89 yesterday, where we once again had a nice ride down.  Now, in pre markets, it is back over $89 again and we'll short it again so I'm not complaining about the action but I am upset that this blatant rip-off of the American consumer can go on right under our "leadership's" noses.

Logic alone dictates that if 132M barrels are on order for delivery to a storage facility that can only handle 45M barrels that the orders are mostly bogus.  You can track the open interest every day right here so don't take my word for it, watch what happens over the next few days as the people who are currently pretending to demand oil in January, roll their contracts to pretend demand for February (already at a ridiculous 268M barrels), March (172Mb) and April (60Mb).  Like the great Carnac, I will put the envelope to my head and predict that, by Tuesday, the January barrel count will fall to under 30,000 contracts, while the new front three months will rise by close to 100,000 contacts.

This is scam #1 in the energy market and it goes on every month since the "Commodity Futures Modernization Act" of 2000 made it possible for thieves to run the energy markets with virtually no regulations. I've been speaking out on this for years and just this weekend, the NYTimes picked up the ball I tossed up over a year ago (better late than never!), when I pointed out that the Global oil scam was costing us 50 times more than the Madoff scandal EVERY YEAR!  We're not going to go into all that again as I want to highlight scam #2 in the energy markets and that is the weekly manipulation of the oil inventory reports.

Yesterday, Criminal Narrators Boosting Crude were very excited to report that we had a 9.9Mb draw in oil inventories.  WOW!  That sounds like a lot of oil demand doesn't it?  Of course, any real news people would mention that the report clearly indicated that "U.S. crude oil imports averaged 7.7 million barrels per day last week, down by 1.4 million barrels per day from the previous week" but CNBC is not news, is it? As I pointed out two weeks ago today, they are nothing more than PROPAGANDA as a station owned by a company that makes a good portion of it's income selling energy-related products and makes much more money when oil prices are high than when they are low.  1.4M barrels a day times 7 days is 9.8 Million barrels that the US was shorted in order to keep the price of oil high - WHY IS NO ONE BEING ARRESTED?!?

It's not just American Citizens who are paying the extra $60M per day that the $3 pop in oil costs us, the rest of the World consumes another 70M barrels a day and they are stuck with a $210M per day bill as well for each $3 gain in price.  And that, of course, is before the refining mark-ups.  Just the $270M a day they screwed us out of this week is a very nice $98.5Bn annual rip-off of the global population or, what I pointed out last year is a Double Madoff!

Now consider that the real price of oil, when measured as global output vs. global demand on a historic basis should be closer to $60 a barrel than $90 and you have a TRILLION DOLLAR annual scam going on and our joke of a government does NOTHING to prevent it. Oh wait, I'm sorry, they do something, they accept massive campaign contributions from the Energy industry to block any legislation meant to put a stop to this on-going crime.  Perhaps if it were "just" a Trillion Dollars that was being stolen we could just laugh it off and accept it but the artificially inflated price of oil impacts food and many other products plus, as I mentioned, the refining mark-up alone almost doubles the net cost to consumers so, Globally, we're paying close to $5Tn in inflated prices just so the Energy Cartel can screw us out of $1Tn. It would be much cheaper to just hand them the cash in exchange for charging a fair price for the oil, wouldn't it?

By the way, I apologize to my Republican friends for the above cartoon - the Democrats have had two years to do something about this and have proven themselves to be just as big a bunch of sleazeballs as the Republican's ever were.  How's that for fair and balanced.  This is a GLOBAL problem and it's obviously not going to be fixed by the voters or the people in power so I'm going to reach out to the business community.

The Global Corporations who do not sell energy products who are also suffering as $5Tn of consumer money is being diverted away from their companies in order for consumers to overpay for food, energy and other related products.  That's 10% of global GDP that could be spent on assets, rather than going up in smoke every year! The non-energy companies need to get their own lobby together - one that calls for oversight and regulation of this industry and they'd better do it soon as our friends at Goldman Sachs are already pimping for the next $5Tn rise in energy-related spending as they raise their forecasts over the $100 per barrel mark - something that will, once again, collapse the global economy while Lloyd and Co line their pockets with record bonuses and Government bail-outs.

Meanwhile, has anyone noticed that the Hang Seng has dropped 800 points in 2 days?  I know that doesn't fit into the Global growth narrative the MSM is shoving down our throats but surely someone is paying attention to China's rapidly declining market?  Things were looking so bad this morning that Goldman Sachs tried to manipulate the market by announcing a new China-based hedge fund (2:30 am) and then the S&P jumped in at 3am and hiked China's credit rating which halted the decline for about a half hour but then they dropped another 100 points into the close.

I like to play a game in the morning called "Let's see how long I can listen to CNBC and not hear a word about this" - it's lots of fun as you watch them tap-dance around mentioning any news that goes against their narrative and China falling is a big one for them to ignore but, so far today, they are batting 1,000!

Copper is also in it's 3rd consecutive day of decline as expanding Global inventories can no longer be swept under the rug.  7,050 tons of copper made their way onto LME inventory yesterday and now there are 357,950 tons in storage as it appears that Shanghai is once again reaching their storage limit of 200,000 tons.  We shorted FCX in Monday's Member Chat, so a little disclosure here but it's nice to see we seem to have caught that wave.

Nonetheless, commodity assets have expanded to a record $345Bn as of the end of November, led by index-led investments.  In other words, the relentless targeted manipulation of the markets in this low-volume rally has gotten index funds to push heavily into commodities.  This allows the Goldman's of the World to turn ordinary 401K investors into commodity bag-holders right at the top of the market while retail investors are also drawn in, plopping another $6.1Bn into ETFs, a 10% increase in a single month!

We have all heard that China is having inflation issues and we've all heard that the PBOC will be hiking rates next year to combat it and we all know that the average Chinese worker makes $2,000 a year yet people continue to "invest" in the China/Commodity story as if we're at the beginning and not the end.

While you are BUYBUYBUYing, keep in mind that Corporate Insiders are SELLSELLSELLing, at a pace not seen since 2007!  This, of course, comes as not surprise to Phil's Stock World readers, as we have a section called the "Insider Zone" that keeps us on top of what's going on inside Corporate America and you can click on that link and see lots of fun charts so I won't try to paint a picture here other than to say - Be careful out there!

Chase Bank, a major component of JP Morgan Chase Corporation, ransacked a dying man's home in Seattle, Washington according to KOMO News.

Apparently, JD Butler was on his death bed in a hospital when Chase invaded the home and ransacked the place.

Apparently, Chase hired contractors who acted like thugs to invade the home and carry out valuable artwork. According to the daughter, Celeste Butler, the man was current on payments. At least that is what the bank told her.

The only mistake the daughter made, in explaining the lawsuit she is filing on behalf of her father who died in January, 2010, is when she says that Chase bank is a reputable business. We know better as we follow the fallout from the housing bubble and Ponzi lending scheme.

And Chase is known to charge massive usury on credit cards. But of course there are no usury laws existing in this nation anymore as politicians have abandoned their responsibility to protect the people from the new robber barons, the banksters. Add to this, JP Morgan has been implicated in the Ponzi interest only payday loan scam that robs from the poor.

This is the bottom line, if you can't pay cash, then don't buy a house. If you get behind in your payments, whether legitimately or not, and the courts will have to decide in the Butler case, you have few rights. You are at the mercy of greedy banksters who cannot wait to take back their property, which was the goal of the ponzi lending scam in the first place. There was no reported apology from Chase Bank to the Butlers here. Why does that not surprise me?

And the issue of faulty servicing of loans keeps coming up. I suggest that if one arm of the bank doesn't know what the other arm of the bank is doing, that this is a disturbing development. Anyone who has a mortgage should be concerned about proper application of payments to the loans. If these companies are making so little money on the servicing of the loans, then perhaps this is why they are so greedy to get their hands on property these days.

Is JP Morgan a Skank Bank? More Shameful Behavior Has Been Reported

I hope that people would pull their money out of this biggest of investment banks, JP Morgan, who, along with Goldman Sachs, is reported to be doing a lot of damage to mainstreet. We need to understand that the bankers have been so corrupt that they have leveraged prices up to amazing levels. It has been reported that JPM may have leveraged short gold and silver up 100 to 1 which is even worse than the 40 to 1 mortgage bond fraud that resulted in the housing bubble crash. If this is the case investors must be very careful regarding the stock of JPM, the options of silver and gold and the question if taxpayers will bail out any massive bet gone bad.

Will the government bail out COMEX if JP Morgan loses the short bet they have on silver? It is possible that if JPM could pay off on their short but maybe not. I really doubt that the US government will bail out the gold market. If the government won't bail these investors out, then you better, as Peter Schiff says, own physical gold and not the leveraged COMEX market gold.

The question then remains whether JP Morgan is shorting without the funds to pay the loss. That would be problematic for the stockholders of JPM, who could be thrown under the bus. There is nothing illegal or immoral about JPM shorting any commodity, stock, bond or whatever. The immorality is in the alleged leverage levels applied. If the TBTF bank shorts with leverage that could cause the bank to go under, then taxpayers will be on the hook. Why must this always be? We can't afford it. And then there is the issue of options traders, who lose money because of being flooded with trades that effectively set the price. Some companies, as is reported, including JPM, apparently have, or could have the ability to set price through manipulative trades.

It has been reported that JP Morgan is in the process of unwinding the silver short position that came to public knowledge through a private trader and Max Keiser. Apparently, this skank of a bank had the Bear Stearns short position, and may have been forced to take over Bear by our private Federal Reserve Bank because the defunct investment bank had almost defaulted. By leverage, companies sell paper that may not be adequately backed by a commodity, causing a meltup in price, which results in a crash.

This is exactly what happened in the housing bubble, as borrowers and investors drove the price of houses up, only to see the inside money get out of bullish positions and short the inevitable decline. This behavior is very hurtful to mainstreet. But if the commodity keeps going up for too long, the bank could have to cover the short, which means buy massive amounts of the commodity. The bank may be forced to redeem their paper, which means that they would have to supply gold they never had since the paper is backed by very little gold or silver or whatever commodity is in the trade.

I do not believe that believe that commodity inflation can go on without correcting. But it can go on long enough until mainstreet is insolvent. I do not know that this will be the case but it could be. I do not know if Schiff, Paul, Faber, etc, are correct, but we need to be aware of their position and monitor inflation and fight asset inflation, which may be occurring in an environment of deflationary expectations. In other words, with the housing bubble crashing, there are cross currents between inflation and deflation. The investment banks like JP Morgan can use commodity inflation and flooded trades to push stock and commodity prices up, waiting for them to crash and profit handsomely. But, these bubbles are very hurtful to mainstreet even if the currency isn't destroyed.

Making Money Off Youtube

LG looks to be taking a page from MSI’s playbook, with another big announcements before CES 2011 kicks off. This time the Korean manufacturer has announced the LGW6500 Cinema 3D TV, a flicker free 3D TV that does not require shutter glasses — saving money and also easier on your eyes. Ready to learn more?

LG began their CES 2011 assault with a range of 3D AV devices, followed up with the world’s largest full LED 3D TV and now they are breaking ground with a new Cinema 3D TV, the LG LW6500. Unlike traditional 3D technology, LG’s Cinema 3D TVs do not require shutter glasses, instead images are displayed on the LW6500 are entirely free of flicker. Certification from Intertek and TUV, two of the most respected certification bodies in the world, mean the LW6500 is the first 3D TV in the world to receive the “flicker free” designation.

You’ll still need a pair of 3D glasses to use the LG LW6500, but the flicker-free image will make the 3D viewing more comfortable and “far less likely to induce eye fatigue”. Weighing in at just 16 grams, the included 3D glasses have no electrical parts and never need to be recharged. Most importantly, the glasses are far less expensive compare to traditional shutter glasses so buying a dozen pairs for family and friends is not a life-changing investment.

Like all of LG’s new line of TVs, the LG LW6500 uses Smart TV technology, bringing LG’s library of apps and premium content to your living room from services such as HuluPlus, YouTube and others. Other key tidbits on the LW6500 include the TruMotion 200Hz processor, 2D to 3D conversion, DivX Plus/HD, DLNA,WiFi/DVR ready and HDMI 1.4. That stat sheet never seems to end with the LW6500, but one thing is for certain — we’ll put the set through its paces at CES in a couple of weeks.

It looks like LG is ready to take on the home cinema market with a complete set of 3D audio visual gear and at least two stellar TVs. Anyone else considering making the switch to 3D now that there’s finally a ground breaking product like the LW6500 that eliminates the outrageous price of 3D glasses?

Online campaigns help provide clean drinking water, food and malaria-preventing bed nets to people who need them.

Creative uses of the web are helping to provide and enhance education. These four projects, for instance, found innovative ways to help build schools through digital campaigns.

1. Epic Change

Epic Change has become a model for raising money using social media. Since 2008, its annual TweetsGiving has asked people to tweet about what they’re thankful for while making a donation. The strategy was so successful that #tweetsgiving became a trending topic on Twitter during the first year’s campaign.

Starting out, the benefactor of TweetsGiving was a school in Tanzania that was founded by Mama Lucky Kamptoni, a passionate local woman who started the school using money she earned from her poultry business (now there are two more benefactors). Epic Change wanted to help her rebuild and expand the school.

The organization also launched To Mama With Love, a website where users can make a donation by creating a “heart space” for a mother they care about. The “heart space” is a collection of photos, videos and words dedicated to that mother. Other people who care about that mother are invited to donate in her honor.

From one of the classrooms that was built using donations from these campaigns, the students now tweet and connect with the rest of the world.

“So often, we hear the stories of children in the so-called ‘developing’ world from the perspective of the media, non-profits or friends who have traveled or volunteered,” explains the Epic Change Blog. “What happens now – when these students can share their own stories, and build relationships with the rest of the world, for themselves? How will the world be different when these children, who live so geographically far away, move into our virtual backyard? What difference will it make in their lives to know that their voices will be heard?”

2. Stillerstrong

When Ben Sitller launched the Stillerstrong campaign on YouTubeclass="blippr-nobr">YouTube, Twitterclass="blippr-nobr">Twitter and a branded website, he did it with a video that poked fun at Lance Armstrong’s Livestrong campaign. It was hard to tell if he was kidding.

But the campaign, which sells Stillerstrong headbands and accepts donations by text message and credit card, has raised about $300,000 to help provide temporary schools for Haitians displaced by January’s earthquake. At the time the campaign was announced, the organization and its partners Causecast and the Global Philanthropy Group were expecting each school to cost between $45,000 and $55,000.

3. TwitChange

Instead of auctioning off celebrity memorabilia to support a charity, TwitChange hosts eBay auctions for celebrity Twitter interaction. The donation’s bidders put down to have a celebrity follow them, retweet their tweet, or mention them in an update. The proceeds go to aHomeInHaiti.org, which will use them to build a home and school for children with disabilities in Haiti.

The first auction in September raised $531,640.25. The website instructs us to “stay tuned for the celebrity tweet auction coming this holiday season.”

4. University of the People

Less of a “campaign” than a full-blown effort to democratize education, University of the People provides tuition-free higher education through an online campus.

Since launching last year, the university has accepted about 700 students from 100 different countries to its three- to four-year programs for business and computer science. Recently the university opened computer centers in Haiti so that students with limited Internet access could enroll in its courses.

“I do believe that if we take the millions of people around the world who could not afford going to university and teach them tuition free, we’re not only changing their lives, and their family’s lives, we also change their communities, their countries,” founder Shai Shai Reshef says. “And if we have a lot of them, we will change the world for a better world.”
